When buying beef from your local butcher, or an online farm shop/producer the beef will should be traceable back to, at the very least an area within Britain. Most likely the butcher/online shop will not only be able to tell you what area the beef came from, but in some more rural areas the actual farm! Feel free to ask questions as to the welfare of the animals as well. Animals that are fed a good, natural diet will produce more tender, flavoursome beef.
If you buy beef produced abroad not only will there be a lack of traceability as where the beef actually originated from, but also animal welfare standards in many countries (even within the EU) may be much lower than in Britain.
If the beef is "Hung" in the correct way, and for the correct length of time, the beef will be darker in colour and more tender.
