The price you pay for your chicken/poultry, turkey etc. will reflect the way the bird has been farmed and reared. Buy a very cheap chicken and you can more or less guarantee that it has been intensively farmed and this of course will reflect on the bird's quality of life and welfare issues. Intensively farmed chickens can be reared and go to slaughter in just over a month. I won't go into the rights and wrongs of this method of farming as, due to the regular scrutiny of intensive farming methods, I'm sure that most people have seen, heard and learned enough via the TV, radio and media to make up their own minds.

More expensive/organic chickens, turkeys etc. will have generally had a better quality of life, had less stress, have been fed better quality, more natural feed and - because of all these factors - it should, of course, taste a hell of a lot better! I'm not sure, in these days of supermarket and convenience/speed shopping, that a large percentage of the population of Britain actually knows what a proper chicken should taste like.

Please be aware that pre-packed chicken/turkey cuts can be injected with water and proteins (some of which may come from other types of animal). Injecting chicken/poultry with proteins is banned in Britain, but not in other countries that can legally export their poultry products to the UK.
