For farmers to be considered fully organic, or certified by a body like The Soil Association, can be an expensive business.

For vegetable/fruit farmers the soil should be fertilised with natural manures only.

For livestock farmers the animals should be fed on organically grown feed and a high standard of animal welfare should be adhered to.

In saying that, responsible and ethically correct farming doesn't necessarily have to be "Organic". Many farms and meat producers have the highest standards of animal welfare and produce flavoursome, tender meat, but have decided that going totally organic is either impractical, or not cost effective.
