You may think any old battery charger will do for your caravan, motorhome, RV or boat's 12 volt electrical system, but this is not the case. If you used a standard, stand alone battery charger (i.e. a charger used for charging up your car battery when it goes flat) you would run the risk of damaging your leisure/marine vehicle or craft's 12v electrics. Conventional car battery chargers sometimes raise the battery voltage as high as 14.8 volts (to clear sulphation from the battery plates), whereas an on-board leisure battery charger probably won't charge the battery much more than 13.6 volts. If the voltage is too high (i.e. 14.8 volts and not 13.6 volts) there is a strong possibility of component failure in your caravan, motorhome, RV or boat's 12 volt electrical system.
As the leisure/marine battery/batteries in your caravan, motorhome or boat will only reach maximum 13.6 volts if left permanently connected to the on-board leisure battery charger/power supply the battery plates will become corroded/sulphated thus causing a decrease in battery performance. The ideal way to keep your leisure or marine batteries in tip-top condition, especially where the battery/batteries are left idle for long periods, would be to periodically charge the leisure battery/batteries on a good quality stand alone charger for peak battery performance. See our range of Budget/Standard Battery Chargers and Ring Smart Battery Chargers if you would like to purchase a quality battery charger.
