What's the difference between a basic battery charger, a standard battery charger and a smart battery charger?

The 'Ring Basic' range of 12 volt battery chargers are suitable for lead-acid batteries (not Gel), have LED display to show charge progress, but will require supervised charging, i.e. they are not automatic.

The 'Ring Standard' range of 6 & 12 volt battery chargers are suitable for most types of lead-acid batteries incuding Gel. All have LED display to show charge progress, are fully automatic (suitable for permanent connection) and have fast/slow charge selection. Typically battery chargers that are suitable for permanent connection will start in bulk charge mode, then switch to final charge mode until the battery voltage reaches around 14.8 volts. The charger will then switch to float charge thus maintaining the battery voltage at 13.2 - 13.6 volts so that is always ready for use.

Why do I need a battery charger?

Well, for the obvious fact that you may encounter a flat battery problem at some point. But, also a the 'Ring Standard' and 'Ring Smart Charger' battery chargers can come in useful for maintaining batteries that may be left idle for long periods in optimum condition and avoid battery 'sulphation' which can ruin a lead-acid battery.
